I am on a donair craze lately, so I decided to try Babylon Cafe while hanging around Pacific Centre with BM the other day.

It was definitely a busy location, and they were quite efficient at getting orders out. However, the space is cramped and you have to squeeze through queueing people to pay.

I like how they wrap their donairs with aluminum foil to keep warm!

The verdict is, I did not like it at all. The sauce was overpowering, along with all the other sour-flavoured ingredients in there. The entire thing was just sour. The lamb was also dry and flavourless, it was nothing compared to the aromatic meat I have had before at Donair King. I don't get the hype about this place =S

i think the hype is probably because of the location, they have a very strategic location, it is convient. yeah I can never figure out the floor plan either, it feels very tight and inefficient, than agian they have been there for a long time. you should Falafel Maison a couple of blocks down, next to papa beard on robson, their shawarma and donairs are really good. i think they marinate their meat with spices, the flavour is very nice.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the recommendation! Hahaha I am so obsessed with donairs lately! But yeah...I did not enjoy Babylon Cafe at all...I did not understand why it was so sour =S
You ordered the wrong thing. If you go to Babylon, it is chicken or chicken, as it is what they sell more and chances are it will be "fresh". Lamb? It could have been prepared earlier and kept inside a hot box. It could be sliced to order but that's a big might.
ReplyDeleteAnother problem with Babylon is inconsistency. Depending on who is preparing it for you, it could be loaded or it could be anemic. And, at times, they might skip those vegetables you didn't like (on that note, did you have your portions of veggies today? :P )
@Kim
ReplyDeleteBut I like veggies though! Just not the pickled(?) ones that were in the donair...plus the sauce they put in were sour too...iono...it was just really sour...I don't exactly know what kind of veggies I am suppose to ask them to take out either LMAO plus they made it so fast that by the time I wanted to ask them to take things likes onions out my donair was done already
I thought you wanted to try Donair Dudes, have you had a chance yet?

ReplyDeleteI never got a chance to grrrr ><
oh I think the sourness came from the tabouleh salad, it has parsley,lemon juice and onions. I don't mind tabouleh salad as a side item with a sharwarma plate but sometimes with the wrap it can get over-bearing.

ReplyDeleteIt didn't taste that sour when I had the donair at Donair King though...I am pretty sure there was tabouleh in there...maybe too much lemon juice...I took the onions out manually too...
